The Post Office has announced that vulnerable people who are shielding will now be able to receive deliveries of cash payments through a partnership of the Post Office and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The cash payments are for DWP to use to support vulnerable people in England initially.
Specific customers can be contacted through the National Shielding Service to determine if they need to receive a cash payment. If so, the DWP will notify the Post Office of these people and the Post Office will ensure that cash is sent to their home, using Royal Mail Special Delivery by 9pm the following day. The scheme is designed to provide people with a “last-option mechanism” for accessing cash, for those who cannot visit their normal payment location.
The Post Office has repurposed part of its foreign exchange cash delivery business to enable the overnight delivery of sterling cash and meet demand. The Pensions Minister, Guy Opperman said “We’re doing whatever it takes to ensure people are supported through these unprecedented times. This joint initiative enables us to reach out directly to those most likely to need support, and get cash delivered to their door where necessary.”
The press release also said that two of the Post Office’s access to cash products – ‘Fast PACE’ and ‘Payout Now’ have been made available to the UK’s banks, building societies and credit unions. These products can be offered to their customers who are self-isolating and require cash. Please find details of the new schemes below:
