About Keighley and District Branch

The above is an old photo of Keighley Police Officers in 1865!

Keighley is a town and civil parish in West Yorkshire and it is surrounded by the towns of Bingley, Shipley and Ilkley (which features in our county song of On Ilka Moor Baht ‘at!) which until recent times formed part of a large geographic policing division.

Up until the boundary changes of 1974 the then Keighley Division also embraced the towns of Skipton, Settle and Barnoldswick and it bordered the counties of Cumbria and Lancashire. A multitude of villages were incorporated in the area including Haworth (of the Bronte sisters fame), Silsden, Baildon, Grassington, Giggleswick and Burley-in-Wharfedale – each with their own unique characteristics.

Keighley and District has a rich and varied policing history and it encapsulated all from the policing of dense urban areas to wild and rugged moorland and countryside of outstanding natural beauty.

Police Officers having served in the area are equally varied, sharing in common only a desire to help others and an unyielding sense of policing humour! The area is now part of the wider Bradford Division.

Branch Secretary Information

Keighley and District Branch is one of the smaller West Yorkshire branches with just over 250 members, but it is extremely vibrant and well-supported by companionable and welcoming members.

Members are retired police officers and spouses/partners or their widows/widowers, support staff and other former associates of the policing family and most have either worked in the area or now reside in it. The Branch Secretary is Peter Corkindale (right on image) and the Branch Chair is Tony Hennigan (left on image).

They are greatly supported by their deputies and a committee including a Branch Treasurer, a Welfare Manager, an IT Manager, extremely enthusiastic committee members and others.

The physical and emotional wellbeing of members and their families is the Branches main priority. Meetings, social events and an annual Christmas lunch (attended by half our membership number) are held at the delectable premises of keighley Golf Club. url https://www.keighleygolfclub.com/

During the past ten years, membership has doubled in number and the Branch are eager to welcome new members who will most certainly enjoy the many benefits of joining such a convivial and engaging group.
